The Dalai Lama purportedly said, “Sleep is the best meditation.” There is much wisdom to the Dalai Lama’s words. Surveys show that more and more people are getting less and less sleep. According to the article, “Importance of Sleep – Six Important Reasons Not to Scrimp on Sleep”, more research is needed to determine the link between chronic sleep loss and health. The current research would seem to suggest, however, that sleep is important enough that people should not shortchange themselves from getting enough of it.

What is Sleep?

According to the Michael B. Russo article, “Sleep – Understanding the Basics”, sleep is a state of unconsciousness from which the sleeping person can be awakened. It is important to distinguish sleep from a coma, however. A coma is also an unconscious state, but it is one from which a person cannot be aroused. Sleeping people are generally more responsive to internal stimuli than they are to external stimuli.

Though, historically, sleep was considered a passive state, it is now considered to be a more dynamic process in which the brain is active. Brain activity during states of sleep and wakefulness result from different activating and inhibiting forces generated from within the brain. Neurotransmitters, which are chemicals linked to nerve signaling, control whether a person is asleep or awake by acting on different brain nerve cells. Neurons in the brainstem induce sleep by inhibiting other parts of the brain that induce wakefulness.
