An Oxford Student’s Morning: Breakfast and the Bodleian Library
Begin your day in Oxford by waking early and heading to the library. Grab a coffee and bagel from the Alternative Tuck Shop, on the corner of Holywell Street and Mansfield Road. This is a popular stop for students, particularly those from nearby New College, Mansfield College and Harris Manchester College. Students also stop here on the way to or from the Oxford University English Faculty. After enjoying the friendly atmosphere and tasty food, it’s time to head to the Bodleian Library.
Oxford University’s Bodleian Library is a legal deposit library, which means that it receives copies of all books published in the United Kingdom and The Republic of Ireland, including all foreign books distributed in Britain. A number of these books are stored under the cobbles of Oxford’s streets; others are held elsewhere in the country. The Bodleian is split into various libraries over the city for the use of students and local residents, but its nerve centre sits in and around Radcliffe Square. The Radcliffe Camera is the most recognisable part of the Bodleian; its ornate dome has become a symbol of Oxford. You can take a tour around the oldest parts of the library, situated just of Radcliffe Square, in the appropriately named Old Bodleian. The magnificent Divinity School, dating from the 1400s, stretches into a high ceiling of implausible Gothic arches and stonework faces. From here you can head upstairs to visit Harry Potter’s library, the musty and marvellous Duke Humphrey Library.
Coffee and a Visit to Oxford's Covered Market
Time for a coffee break. From the Bodleian, you can take the familiar student trip across Radcliffe Square to The Vaults and Garden Cafe, which lurks under the Oxford University Church of St. Mary the Virgin. Alternatively, head straight into the Oxford Covered Market off Turl Street and take your break in Georgina’s. Inside the market, have a wander around, try a Ben’s cookie, or a Moo-Moo's milkshake. Check out what display the fishmongers have up – a full shark's head complete with razor-sharp teeth or an glistening array of scaly bug-eyed fish? Look also for the many butchers' hanging deer, and The Cake Shop’s edible works of art being created before your eyes.
