As a personal experiment, a lunar calendar kept on display can help with observations on any effect the moon may be having on the body. It is also helpful to be able to identify the different phases of the moon by sight.

In the Northern hemisphere, to identify when the moon is waxing, it is useful to think of the letter "D" shape. This means the left side of the moon is in partial darkness, and the right is smooth and round while the left appears to move out, or "grow."

The opposite is true of a waning moon, which resembles the letter "C." Now the left side is smooth and round while the right appears to shrink from full back to crescent.
