Hinduism, today the majority religion of India, is at least a thousand years older than Christianity. The first of the Vedas, the great Hindu religious epics were the thousand and more hymns of the Rigveda which was composed in around 1000BC. The Vedas were written in Sanskrit, one of the most ancient languages on Earth.

The Mauryan Empire that Covered all India

The ancient empires of India are almost as old. One of the greatest, the Mauryan Empire came into existence well over three centuries before the time of Christ and an important Indian ruler, Ashoka became its emperor in around 286BC.

During his reign of fifty years, the Mauryan civilization spread all over India. Although Ashoka was a great warrior, he was appalled at the death and destruction that occurred during his campaign to capture the kingdom of Kalinga in eastern India.
