Like to go to tanning beds? Things are changing for consumers who frequent tanning beds. Starting July 1, 2010, tanners will be charged a 10% tax on their tanning bill.
Tanning Tax Imposed on Patrons
Didn't have time to read the 906 page Health Care Reform Bill that passed this week, flip to page 902. At the very end of the bill, a tan tax is revealed. Consumers will be taxed 10% for tanning services. Ironically, the tax for elective procedures such as Botox and breast implants did not make the bill, which has caused an uproar from tanning salon owners. If taxed, cosmetic procedures would have boasted about $5.8 billion for the health care overhaul instead of the $2.7 billion that tanning salons is expected to generate.
It has been baffling to consumers and the tanning salon industry as to why tanning replaced cosmetic procedures in the bill or why cosmetic procedures were completely left out of the bill. Some feel that tanners are being targeted unfairly. The controversy on tanning bed safety and lobbyists from the cosmetic surgery industry appear to be two reasons that tanning replaced cosmetic surgeries in Obama' s Health Care Bill. According to Jan Meshon, the cost for a consumer can be about $15 or $20 a visit. A 10% tax imposed on that amount will definitely add up over time.
What Does the Tanning Tax Mean for Tanning Salons?
Tanning salon owners fear that this will put their business in jeopardy. If clients decide that a 10% tax is too much for them to spend in this economy on top of their regular tanning bill, business will suffer. Tanning salons will have to reevaluate their business strategies and many might have to cut jobs due to their profit loss. In the worst case scenario, some businesses will have to shut their doors.
