Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS), which is commonly referred to as "Sleeping Beauty Syndrome" is a very rare condition that causes affected teenagers to sleep for long periods of time. Worldwide, there are only approximately 1,000 documented and confirmed cases.
What is Kleine-Levin Syndrome?
Thought to be caused by a virus, Kleine-Levin Syndrome first presents as excessive sleepiness or drowsiness. Soon thereafter, a teenager may feel unusually cranky. To combat these symptoms, a nap is usually sought. What separates these teens from most is the length of their nap; there are reports of teens with this syndrome sleeping for over 13 straight days. This can be detrimental to a teen's social and family life, as well as their performance in school and other events. Aside from feelings of drowsiness or confusion, there is little warning leading up to an oncoming episode. Sleeping episodes occur both cyclically sporadically; Each time an individual with this syndrome is about to undergo a prolonged period of sleep, they become irritated, exhausted, and appear to be "not themselves." This pattern of characteristics makes it cyclical. The fact that this pattern presents itself in no specific time frame makes it sporadic. Those who suffer from this disorder often can not plan around them.
